Sharing very sad news for my Buffalo friends.

I heard from Tim Burns' brother Scott that Tim passed away today.

His heartfelt note follows:

R. Scott Burns I hate to report that Tim passed away early this afternoon. He was diagnosed with liver cancer late last year and started immune therapy early this year. All seemed to be going well; he continued to play tennis and felt well. All markers were positive. I couple of weeks ago, things turned. C-diff, sepsis, kidney and liver failure, etc.

Too much to overcome. I asked his children, Ashlen and Drew, what Tim’s favorite musical artists were, so I could listen to them while thinking of him in the comings days, weeks, months … The Eagles and Journey … in case you wish to join me in celebrating his life.

Also, if you wish to share this message, I hope you will free to do so. (I did inform Mark Lesniowski.) All the best, always Having been in irregular phone contact over the years since our days as growing-up Besties, I never knew. I have to assume that's how he wanted it.

Scott will keep us apprised of plans. It's a sad sad day - here's a photo from a 2001 rendezvous at some bowl game or other. Rest in eternal peace, Good Man. Peace and out.

How tragic to realize our beloved class President has passed.  I admired Tim Burns so much.  What an incredible athlete he was and what a fine gentleman and leader he was.  I remember one time in gym class he scaled a rope about 20 feet up using only his hands as he kept his legs fully extended and parallel to the floor going up and down.   And seeing him pole vault was just amazing.  Ditto for all he did as our quarterback or any other sport he participated in.  Though I never got to know him well, I always looked up to him and was inspired by him.  The really great thing about Tim was that even though he was endowed with such incredible, amazing  gifts and talents, he never came off as conceited, haughty, pround, or arrogant.  Instead he was humble, kind, supportive and encouraging.  He always used his wonderful talents to inspire others to be the best they could be.  I am so honored to have been his classmate and also teamate (football) during our senior year.  Tim was a solid, class guy.  Like the character "David Watts" (celebrated in the Kinks song from 1967 of the same title),  I will always remember Tim Burns as "the head boy at our school" and the one we guys "wished we could be like..."   At one of our reunions about 10 years ago I remember Tim giving a wonderful talk and prayer before our meal.  Even then, Tim Burns was a bright star and an incredible gift to all of us in the class of 1969 South.  May God rest Tim's soul.  AMEN.  Bruce Sabatino

Tim and I met and became good friends in the second grade at Academy Elementary and were in the same class again in grades 4-6, as well as through junior and senior high school. We played basketball together on freshman, sophmore and senoir years. I spent many summer afternoons, growing up, at his house on Garrison Road swimming in their pool. We caddied together at the Country Club of Buffalo and frequently played golf there on Mondays, being "Caddy Day." I would be struggling to break 90, while Tim would be cruising easily to a round in the mid 70's. He was incredibly intelligent and extremely talented at whatever he wanted or attempted to do. He defined the all American Boy. Once we hit 18, there were frequent trips to Brunners, Eduardo's and the Driftwood Room at the Transit Lanes (and, sometimes before we were 18). During college years, many trips to the bars on Elmwood Avenue. Also, the many New Year's Eve parties at his house. Throughout those many years he was always a very good friend to me and remained the well grounded, sincere person I always knew him to be. May he rest in peace, gone far too soon, my friend. Tim and I were able to share memories at the 40th reunion in 2009. Our little league football team from the early 60s, practicing in the gathering darkness behind Academy Street school, running a single wing offense, and even earning the right to play at the old War Memorial Stadium during the half time of a Bills-Boston Patriots game... We also spoke of caddy day at CCB on Mondays, when he and I would practice at the range until late in the afternoon, and how he got into trouble with Bill O'Brien, the caddy master, for taking me over there because caddies like me were supposed to vacate the grounds by noon. We laughed about that, and basketball, and youth baseball. We recalled the strangeness of 1968-69, and competing against other, when we had always been teammates. But we seemed like teammates again at the reunion.
Tim's dad was hurt in the mid sixties and I remember feeling bad for Tim and his family. A short time after that accident, my dad was killed in a car crash. At the reunion Tim kindly asked how my family had held up.
We didn't live near each other while growing up, but through shared experiences in sports we became friends and were able to connect again 40 years later.
I am thankful for having known Tim.

I got to know Tim our senior year during football and basketball seasons.  Fond memories of pizza and beverages at Eduardo's after basketball games with Rex, Lou, Paul and Barb Wagner.  He always had a smile to share and a warm hello when ever he saw you.  Enjoyed reminiscing with him at our 40 and 50 year reunions.  RIP Tim.

Like everyone, I'm so sad to hear of Tim's passing. Like Bruce said, he was such a " gentleman", even in high school ! You just knew he was going to grow up being special. No arrogance or conceit, just a special person. RIP Tim

My Tim Burns story is quite unique. Back in the 1940s my dad and aunt worked in downtown Buffalo at Savage Litho ... owned by Tim's Grandfather.  At one of the open house programs at Mill Middle in the 60s dad ran into his old friend Marleah Savage who was now Mrs. Burns!  They hadn't seen each other in 20 years and had a great time catching up.. Though I was not a friend of Tim's I always remember that connection. So I guess you could say Tim and I go way back!  Savage Litho was the start of my dads career as a lithographer. RIP Tim.

Timothy “Tim” Robert Burns, 73, of Lake Mary, FL, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on September 2, 2024. Tim was born to William and Marleah Burns on December 12, 1950, in Buffalo, NY. He graduated from high school in Buffalo in 1969 and from Williams College in 1973. Soon after graduation from college, he moved to Florida to begin his career in real estate, land development and construction. He met his future wife, Marsha, when they were next door neighbors in Jacksonville. They married in 1976. During his life in Florida, Tim lived in Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Clearwater Beach, Longwood, and for the last 30 years, Lake Mary. He built custom single-family homes, apartments and commercial buildings. His most recent focus was on “workforce housing” in secondary markets.

Proud of his Irish heritage and always a die-hard Buffalo Bills fan, he took every opportunity to celebrate games and St. Patricks events!   Tim was a tremendous athlete, excelling in golf and tennis. He loved his Lake Mary community and his Holy Cross family.

Tim was passionately involved in helping others, serving the community and impacting future generations.  He was  honored as the 2024 Crusader for Education Award recipient at Holy Cross Lutheran Academy for his work in support of  Christian education  and for being a strong  advocate and expert advisor for many of HCLA’s growth projects and expansion plans. For almost a decade Tim has served on the board at Kids House of Seminole County - A beacon of hope and healing for abused and neglected children and their families. He is also a founding member of The Sharing Center’s Facilities and served as the Vice Chair of the  Housing Committee. Due to Tim’s love for his church and his unwavering commitment to excellence, he was recently appointed board chair for the Central Florida Cross Network.

Tim is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Marsha, and his two children Andrew (Stacy) and Ashlen. He is also survived by his brothers John (Caryl), Scott (Cynthia) and Kevin (Elaine), sisters-in-law Janet and Leslie as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Tim will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues and all who knew him. A memorial service to honor and celebrate Tim’s life will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 1:00 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Lake Mary, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Tim’s honor be made to  Holy Cross Lutheran Academy- Sanford,  FL. American Family Funerals and Cremations, Casselberry, FL is handling the arrangements.
